Huh Re: Running battle for middle earth

well, the standard official system requirements are
Quote:
* OS: Windows XP or 2000
* CPU: 1.3 GHz or faster
* RAM: 256 MB
* DISC DRIVE: 8x or faster CD/DVD drive
* HARD DRIVE: 4 GB or more free space
* VIDEO: DirectX 9.0b compatible (see right)
* SOUND: DirectX 9.0b compatible
* INPUT: Keyboard and mouse
All three components depend on what motherboard you have (or are planning to buy). I'd suggest an Asus or DFI as motherboard. The future is PCI Express 16x, but if you want to cut on costs, the latest AGP 8x videocard will do the job too.

I'd suggest you take at least the double for future use.
CPU: 2.6 GHz
RAM: 1024 mb
Videocard: the amount of RAM isn't important, it's the speed that counts. I know people who have a 256mb videocard and can't play games that i can with my 128mb. It's the speed, not the memory.

I'd suggest you'd go for an AMD instead going for an Intel, since you are planning to play games, not MS Word or video editing. s754 is out of the business (socket 754, which i still use), i'd suggest you'd go for socket 939. This again, depends on the motherboard you (soon) have.

I'd suggest a gigabyte of RAM will do. at least 512mb is needed these days for games (battlefield 2, sims2, doom3) and the next LOTR-game might be too. You can still go with 512mb RAM,but i suggest you pay that 30$ more and get something usefull. Dual Channel memory does the job better then single-channel (tell me, i'm on single channel). Again, it's on the motherboard.

The videocard is the hardest part. AGP or PCI Express.
I myself use an ATI Radeon 9600pro AGP 8x 128mb videocard and it works fine with the three games named above where i speak about the memory. I hate glitches or anything going un-smooth.
But for future use i assume an 6600GT videocard is the minimum these days. Videocards are expensive. very expensive. how far are you willing to pay for your graphics?

I hope this info will do. I can't do much with it since you're not providing enough info. If you're not planning on future use, you might as well spend 200$ on a used system.

Re: Running battle for middle earth

I think my laptop would meet all those requirements and wouldn't have problems running it, though it's actually an old hp Pavilion dv4000. In other words, an average-priced standard computer built from, like, Best Buy or something similar should suffice.

Re: Running battle for middle earth

LOL @ BEST BUY, no offence, but do not purchase anything there, they are junk. ok here is exactly what you can do, and its middle range priced and VERY EXCELLENT computer components.

go to the sony store and buy a desktop computer RB series (probably 3 ghz cpu dual core pentium D processor with 1 gb ddr2 ram) ddr2 is faster than ddr and only intel boards support it. NOW, this is a pci-e board, so you can go and buy the nvidia geforce 7800 gt 256mb pci-e graphics card which is WICKED AWESOME. it can run the top graphical games today like FEAR on max settings (but only 1024x768 res for FEAR)

ok so now you have a computer and graphics card, next thing is probably power supply, since the card takes a lot of juice. get the Antec 550watt power supply, its affordable and very well worth it. Now you're running a monster machine if you feel like it, add a floppy drive, get a new case for it, mod it, whatever. and the computer has a 7.1 surround sound card integrated.

almost forgot to mention, this will only cost you around $1700 american... thats for the computer, the graphics card, power supply, new fancy case (if you want). the computer comes with keyboard, mouse and speakers, but not a monitor... i personally dont like sony monitors, ive had bad experience with them, so i would suggest an LG monitor or BenQ. (and just because a company makes good computers, doesnt mean they make good laptops, monitors etc...)

also a good GAMING keyboard is the logitech G15, all the keys are backlite blue, it has LCD screen telling you cpu usage and ram usage, and it tells you the date and time and calendar, and it has 18 programmable G keys for macro with 3 different functions for each key, so 18x3 programmable keys. it also has multimedia functions for sound and media players built onto it. and it has 2 usb ports build onto the motherboard to link devices. and a good gaming mouse would be logitech G7 cordless mouse. it comes with 2 lithium ion rechargable batteries with a charger, and the charger has a usb port on it for devices. the mouse has 10 programmable buttons on it and can change anywhere from 400 - 2000 dpi with the press of a button, you can program it to be whichever dpi you want. very good gaming mouse because it has the extra buttons on it so you dont have to use keyboard as much. has super sliding gaming feet on the mouse so it has consistant smooth motion, and it has a low battery warning so you can change the battery. what i do is i have one battery charging all the time and the other in the mouse, so when my mouse is dying i just change it in like 5 seconds.

so the keyboard is $100 usd and the mouse is another $100 usd... all together for everything your lookin at probably $2200 - 2300 usd... insane equippment.

Re: Running battle for middle earth

in response to kyatto, if you are looking at speed, go with intel. i am a computer technician and i can tell you this (no offence to you kyatto, im just giving my opinion), intel and amd processors are basically the same for performance once you look at all the pro's and con's. but amd does use less power and generates less heat, but intel is the only one that supports ddr2 ram, which is twice as fast as ddr, so if you went with the intel, your comp would be a little warmer but not that much, and it would also be faster because of the ram... i would highly suggest the intel one i mentioned above... its very hard to choose between amd and intel because they are so close, like intel has higher l2 cache and overall speed, but amd has wide front side bus which allows about the same amount of info thru... so top of the line intel vs top of the line amd, not much difference, which is why i chose intel because of the ddr2 memory support. i hope that helps you...
