Recent reports from Japan suggest that Microsoft's successor to the Xbox will launch there sometime in 2006.

According to recent reports from Japan, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has told Japanese business publication Nihon Keizai Shimbun that the next-generation Xbox console will go on sale in Japan sometime in 2006. Launch dates for other territories were not discussed, but since Microsoft has said on more than one occasion that it would like a simultaneous launch across the world for its next console, it's conceivable that the late-2004/early-2005 release dates that many analysts have been predicting could be a little premature.

Ballmer is also quoted as having told the Japanese press that Microsoft is looking to introduce new services specifically designed to appeal to Japanese consumers and that he didn't believe the company would look to improve upon its poor performance in Japan through the acquisition of Sega assets.
