Asian Tsunami Waves
(This is not some charity organization asking for help)
I'm sure that you guys heard on the news that the Asian Tsunami waves were dreadful. The death toll has reached 84k people and 5 million people need aid. This post is actually meant to inform online gamers/chatters that there's something big and horrible going on in reality since not many teenagers read the news nowadays. (I just found out four days after the tsunami).
In any case, please help these people. I think there will or might be some stations to collect food and all those for the needy. In America stations are set up, I think. For Singaporeans, please read The Straits Times pg 8 (30/12/2004) and find the stations to donate stuff.
Um I'm not advertising anything or what, but I feel that everyone can do a part in helping the needy. The death toll is also expected to rise to 100k (see BBC or CNN or CNA). If anybody wants to view a first person account, there was an American tourist who got shots of the tsunami waves here (I am not advertising his personal site, and I took this link from The Straits Times.)
I saw the footages of the waves on CNN and it was awful. The tsunamis were caused by an earthquake (9 out of ten on the scale) underwater. The sea has also gone 33 meters (I think) deeper and half of the fish population in the ocean near Sumatra is poof. (around there, from what I heard). The sources that I typed out might not be true so please check it up if you're interested. But all I know is that the earthquake affected the spinning of the Earth somehow and researches and doing their jobs (New Years Day might come early... ).
Please help in any way if you can, thanks guys!

Yeah, me too. But it's a sad tragedy.
I've also read that Australia is giving $27 million USD for helping the needy people

Re: Asian Tsunami Waves
You're right MissChiChi, it is terrible. The area affected is absolutely huge and I can't remember anything like it before. It'll take a while to clean up after what's happened, but at least people are giving what they can and the aid agencies are getting through with help where it's needed.
The company I work for has a contract with the British Red Cross & everything's ground to a halt so we could help process all the donations. We've taken thousands of calls over the last 2 days - people have been very generous, and it's showing no signs of letting up.

Re: Asian Tsunami Waves
9.0 to be certain. There's a + - 0.3 though.
From what I heard, Thailand/Bangkok was actually warned beforehand (1 day) when Australia detected it. But they decided not to inform the country because it would affect tourism. Madness I'd say.
I was also shocked that parts of Africa got hit... Somalia.
Oh and read this article about Megatsunamis. It's helpful to Americans living in middle America and/or Alaskans.

Re: Asian Tsunami Waves
My thoughts and prayers go out to the families. I can't believe so much money has been raised.

Re: Asian Tsunami Waves
Wikipedia has been updating the number tolls everyday. Everytime I check it, it's raised by either 10k or 20k. And that's very scary...
More tsunamis are bound to hit, geologists say...

Re: Asian Tsunami Waves
last time i heard the death toll was over 117,000..
but it is real good that every one care and is send money/food/supplies for them.
i was watching the news some what last night.
they were sending helicopters over their with milk and what not, so many people were coming out of nothing and fighting over food, but i guess i would do the same if i had to drink coconut milk just to eat

Re: Asian Tsunami Waves
It's expected to rise to 400,000. That's just Indonesia's Sumatra only.

Har, last time I checked the news it was expected to be 150,000.
For some reason I don't seem to really care or have any sympathy for all those people killed, I don't know why but it all just seems like numbers and statistics to me rather then witnessing people dying.
