PlayStation3 will be "1,000 times more powerful" than a PS2

Gamers got a glimpse into the future of the PlayStation games console this week, as more was revealed about the technology behind the third generation machine.
The new "Cell" processor, the chip that will power Sony's forthcoming PlayStation3, will be one thousand times more powerful than the PlayStation2's processor, according to the electronics giant.
The processor, which has been in development since early 2001, will be built on an advanced fabrication line in Japan. The new plant in the Nagasaki Prefecture will cost the company some $1.6 billion.
"Cell will be the basic processor for building networks," Ken Kutaragi, Sony's executive deputy president, told a news conference. "In addition to expanding its use in new applications inside the Sony group, we want to take it outside the home and expand it to a variety of areas."
Toshiba, a partner in the development of Cell along with IBM, also hinted that it aims to use the chip in next-generation consumer devices, possibly set-top boxes, digital broadcast decoders, high-definition TVs, hard disk recorders and mobile phones.
With the amount of time needed to develop the new technology and mass produce the new chip, experts think it could put the earliest possible release date of PS3 back to 2006.

The three companies will spend $400 million over five years to develop the new CPU, using IBM’s silicon-on-insulator process with IBM leading a design team of 400 engineers.
The Cell chip (rumored to be in the range of teraflops, roughly 100 times more powerful than today's Pentium 4 chips) could have given the PlayStation 3 1,000 times the processing power of the PS2. This processing power was supposed to be used to build a multi purpose box capable of handle all sorts of simultaneous processing tasks; a home entertainment hub that will let you play games, surf the Internet, and use the device as a TiVo, all at the same time.
Now that the PS3 will not use the Cell chip, the CPU powering the PS2 successor will not be ahead of the Moore's law, allowing the Xbox 2 to match the PS3 procesing power just by using standard technology available in 2005.
