Linux OS
hey is there anybody out there who has Linux or who could recommend it?
some people say it's better than Microsoft or Macintosh, and it's gaining in popularity as well.
what do you all think?

Re: Linux OS
I was going to partition my hard drive in order to install Mandrake 9.2, however i ****ed up miserably and screwed my windows installation...
With any linux distro, you're not going to be running as many games as its not often that developers port for linux, you're not going to be able to use all the software that you do on Windows and there is quiet a steep learning curve...
As for distros, I was going to install Mandrake 9.2 to start off with because apparently its the most newbie friendly, however from what I've gathered Debian is the best Linux distro...
Probably the best thing for you to do is get a program called Partition Magic, partition a little bit of your hard drive (depends on how big your hard drive is), and install linux on it, that way you can use both linux and windows, and if you don't like linux you can always clear the partition...

Re: Linux OS
if i got it, i would probably have to get Mandrake 10 or maybe Debian (i don't remember what that one was about) -- something my computer can handle [PIII 600MHz, 192MB RAM, 12.1GB HDD, 32MB TNT2]; i seriously need a new system, seeing as i now have a good digital camera (thread in General Discussion).
but compatability was also one of the things i was wondering about -- i need Photoshop CS and games are always good -- but not much at the moment is compatible with Linux.
and of course, theres what it looks like; which is why i wanted to know if anyone had it (and post a screenshot of the desktop).

Re: Linux OS
You can see screenshots on the Mandrake Linux site. But you can theme KDE or gnome or whatever, just how you want it.
This is my Slackware Desktop

i've been to the posted Mandrake screens, and this is my favourite, even though i don't like the way the icons are placed. http://images.mandrakesoft.com/img/s...dk91-scr2.jpgs

Re: Linux OS
Hey, how is Linux or Unix different from windows.....? I mean how do run programs in it. Someone told me you do everything manually and you have to put a lot more time into it.....

Re: Linux OS
never mind..... I don't know what the hell I'm talkin' about... Can you buy a pc with Linux already in it or do you have to get an older computer's data erased and put it in.... (tell me if you have no idea what I'm talkin' about). A friend of mine said he took windows 95 out of his comp and put Linux in....

Re: Linux OS
you can put Linux in a computer just as easily as you can put in a newer version of Windows.
but yes, some computers are sold with Linux already in them, but you have to look around to find them.
no its ok. once you be more specific i know what you're talking about

Re: Linux OS
I still don't know how Linux is different from any other OS... Everyone says you have more freedom and your not restricted... I don't feel restricted with windows so what do they mean...

Re: Linux OS
I've heard great things about Debian. One of my Linux guru friends uses it and prefers it himself.
The thing about Linux is that you won't get to play as many games and use as many software applications as you used to. For instance, JumpDrives require Windows or Mac. Also, it's extremely hard to install. Linux is great unless you want a gaming computer. Those are my reasons with sticking with Windows for now.
Once you get it installed, however, it's awesome. It never crashes, even when you want it to. It's totally free. It's OpenSource, meaning that you can mess with the code if you've got the skills. You can find nearly everything for Linux that Windows has except ten-times better, you just need to look for it. There is a program called GIMP that's like ten-times better than Adobe Photoshop. There's a program called gAIM, which is an IM program that lets you connect to YIM, MSN, and AIM all at once. There's a lot of good reasons to choose Linux. It just takes some work to do it, kinda like building your own computer to get the most out of your money.

Re: Linux OS
Linux is simply an alternative for those with a grudge against M$...they can say this is better and that is better but you can always find something to contradict it. It comes down to a matter of preference.
I use my computer for playing lots of games. I have minimal problems when using it for surfing and no problems doing work on it.
I think some of these people who have so many problems with theirs are doing something wrong , we all are using windows yet some people have endless problems with theirs and some don't.
:?
Simple things will keep your computer running smoothly. Of course I have XP Home which I recommend. Actually XP Professional is more efficient.

Re: Linux OS
Maybe it's just because most of you people aren't trying to use your computer to it's full potential.

Re: Linux OS
I like using windows.
But, it is really hard to diss anything that is free, like Americas army, or WolfET. Sure they might not be the greatest things ever but hell, there free.

Re: Linux OS
I probebly would use linux but windows supports almost every game. So in my opinion it is not better.

Re: Linux OS
That's the only thing I really hate, how almost everything only runs on Windows.
And it's going to get worse once the Longhorn chips start coming out.
