I wouldn't call Avenged Sevenfold emo, unless they changed drastically after their first album. Don't know who FOB are, but I also vote the majority of Matchbook Romance.

really, all these bands are pop-punk/rock and are mostly thought of as emo, which is kinda sad.

listen to any of the songs by those bands, then listen to the mp3's here and play spot the difference.

I'm not trying to bring Mudvayne down because I mean they are freaking awesome.
but if you listen to a few songs of their album LD. 50 there are some strong sounding emo lyrics.
especially towards the end of "death blooms"

It is ****tarded the way kids now refer to emo as a music genre. Emo is not music, it's more of a way of thinking or fashion. I don't like the self-proclaimed emo bands like FOB, Panic! or whatever. They suck ass.

But, MCR is mistreated. Panned as emo by critics, the band is now stereotyped as the generic emo band. Recently their lead vocalist, over-user of eyeliner, Gerard Way stated that "Emo is garbage." and that "Emo is a pile of shit." A lot of fans got butthurt and cut themselves while masturbating to Napoleon Dynamite (Great movie, made stupid thanks to it's emo fanbase)

I like MCR, their music is outstanding and so are their lyrics. How is this emo:

"I am not afraid to keep on living,
I am not afraid to walk this world alone
Tell me if you stay I'll be forgiven,
Nothing you can say can stop me going home."

Isn't that against the whole idea of emo?

Another band panned emo is AFI. Amazing band, really. One of the best hardcore punk bands out there. But they're now considered all emo-ish because they released an electro-rock album, which Myspace kids raped. So anything loved by an emo is emo? Stupid. They raped Edgar Allan Poe and made him emo. Hitler too.

They also ruined one of my favorite bands, HIM. Everyhing they touch gets panned as emo by the media. The media takes this stuff too seriously. Ever watch FOX's report on the subculture that is myspace emo? (Not surprising, FOX is ****.)

I agree on all bases there Max. I love AFI, I've been with them sense the beginning. Right around December Underground is when people labeled them as "emo" because of Davey Havok's hair. P.S. That's his bloody signature hair style, he's had that for ages!

Don't take Poe, don't even mention him as that, for it is the most insulting thing. Edgar was a genius, wrote amazing literature, some of the best short stories. He lived a life of ruin, and died in a ditch, and was a drunk. The hell, if I will ever tolerate anything referring to him as emo.

Black Flag. Listen to some of their music, filled with so much hatred and anger. Listen to "depression," "Life of Pain," "Damaged II."

It's a horrid fashion style. That's adopting way too much.

I've always been confused how people can call both A7X and Brand New, the same "emo genre" yet they sound nothing at all alike.

Emo doesn't exist, myspace unfortunately does.

originally, emo was more of a music genre. unfortunately, it now is more of a way of thinking or fashion. there still are a few good emo bands out there, but the mislabeling of MCR, FOB etc. as emo makes the whole genre pretty useless.

if you listen to most hardcore/punk bands and think the music is less emotional then 'modern emo' you really have a problem.

Also, on the topic of grunge, one of my other favorite genre's. I am obsessed with any album from nirvana, as well as Mudhoney. Started the teen angst, "I hate you mom and dad!" era.

Emo is more of a way of thinking, and no more than a fashion statement. I despise how any form of anger, or sadness these days is referred to as "emo." Anybody has any form of problem, and their labeled as emo.

I've heard a kid talking about how he was upset about a relative passing, and shed a few tears, and someone listening told him to stop being "emo." How that word gets tossed around these days is aggravating.

Exactly. Any song stating any kind of anger or sorrow is emo. Which makes almost every decent rock band emo.

Another thing I can't stand is how the media pans certain bands emo and people actually start criticizing the band without even listening to their songs. An example: Angels & Airwaves. I was told by every person and his grandma that this band sucks, is emo, or whatever.

I listened to their songs, found their lyrics good and music awesome. Songs about love, adventure etc.

I was recently told that I'm emo because I listen to HIM, Marilyn Manson and NIN. *facepalm*
