HD DVD vs Blu Ray
And the winner is... Blu Ray!
This morning Toshiba confirmed that it is quitting the HD DVD business. In a statement released this morning, the Japanese manufacturer announced it is planning to cease production of its stand-alone players and recorders by April.
I bought a HD DVD player last month for my Xbox. :/
Quote:
Toshiba has weathered an increasingly tough storm in recent months. First, it was announced that Warner Bros. was going Blu-Ray exclusive, while rumours persisted that HD-DVD exclusive studios Universal and Paramount were also jumping ship.
Only days ago, another nail was driven into the coffin as US retail giant Wal-Mart announced it would discontinue the format, while the Hollywood Reporter claimed that Toshiba was rumoured to be dropping its own format.
Today, rumour turned into fact. Toshiba confirmed its withdrawal from the HD-DVD hardware market. In a statement released this morning, the Japanese manufacturer announced it is planning to cease production of its stand-alone players and recorders by April, and will evaluate the demand for HD-DVD laptop drives from there.
The company said, "Toshiba will begin to reduce shipments of HD DVD players and recorders to retail channels, aiming for cessation of these businesses by the end of March 2008. Toshiba also plans to end volume production of HD DVD disk drives for such applications as PCs and games in the same timeframe, yet will continue to make efforts to meet customer requirements. The company will continue to assess the position of notebook PCs with integrated HD DVD drives within the overall PC business relative to future market demand."
Toshiba also reiterated its commitment to DVD, stating that "this decision will not impact on Toshiba's commitment to standard DVD, and the company will continue to market conventional DVD players and recorders."
At the time of publishing, Microsoft were unavailable for comment, as was Sony Computer Entertainment Europe. It remains unclear what the future is for the Xbox 360 HD-DVD player or if the company now plans to back Blu-Ray, which it has alluded to in the past. In a statement released yesterday, Microsoft commented, ""We do not believe the recent reports about HD-DVD will have any material impact on the Xbox 360 platform or our position in the marketplace."
Microsoft has previously said it would wait for an official word from Toshiba before it decided on the fate of the 360 HD-DVD player and said the outcome would not affect its future plans for the Xbox 360.

That happened fast. Hopefully blue-ray prices drop. Warner Bros. was proof that it was going to happen anyways.
You know sony is having a field day with this.
I remember a few years ago when Blue Ray was a joke to most, and many thought it would die.
That's disappointing for most people who just bought all of their HD DVD equipment.

Ouch, didn't you see this coming?
Also there's lots of rumors of a 360 blue-ray player be out by as early as May.

At the time.. no, it wasn't until a week later when i saw reports about a certain studio dropping HD DVD to go Blu Ray exclusive, think it was Paramount. I thought it didn't matter, eventually more studios dropped HD DVD and these superstores in America (e.g. Wal mart and best buy etc) stopped selling HD DVD altogether.
Shame really, didn't last very long... though i was hoping there would eventually be one format to choose and unfortunately its Blu Ray.
Doesn't matter i guess, i only have 6 films and 5 of those were free.

You bring new meaning to the expression s**t for brains.
How are you going to support something that doesn't exist einstein?
SFB: Hi, I would like to buy a HD-DVD player.
Salesman: Sir, no one makes HD-DVD players any more as its a dead format
SFB: But I support it! Wait till I tell god about this!
By the way people, you do realise that this war had nothing what so ever to do with gaming?
The war was over the next high definition Video Format.
So this is in totaly the wrong forum.

Re: HD DVD vs Blu Ray
I got a ps3 as a Bluray player, and we got an HDdvd only thing now is the hddvds are gonna be sold quite cheap so I can get em from the US but apart from the I'm gonna wait before I purchase a Bluray movie for a reason that annoys me ALOT. It's not regionfree like hddvd... and I'm not buying my movies in switzerland because it costs much much cheaper in the US, thus I don't know if I should be happy about hddvd dying because I'll have to wait for regionfree players...

Re: HD DVD vs Blu Ray
erm, but it's too late to support it lol
Toshiba has stopped hddvd player production so why would more movies start coming out? I can't support something that disapears. Next thing will be the end of the hddvd disk production because if they stop selling the player same for the disks, so they will be sold at a cheap price to get rid of them and voila, it's the end. I'm sorry but HDDVD has already lost, right after toshiba announced that it was the end for it =) RIP hddvd we barely knew you ^^
