NEW ORLEANS - Hurricane Katrina's victims have put a price tag on their suffering and it is staggering — including one plaintiff seeking the unlikely sum of $3 quadrillion.
The total number — $3,014,170,389,176,410 — is the dollar figure so far sought from some 489,000 claims filed against the federal government over damage from the failure of levees and flood walls following the Aug. 29, 2005, hurricane.
Of the total number of claims, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said it has received 247 for at least $1 billion apiece, including the one for $3 quadrillion.
"That's the mother of all high numbers," said Loren Scott, a Baton Rouge-based economist.
For the sake of perspective: A mere $1 quadrillion would dwarf the U.S. gross domestic product, which Scott said was $13.2 trillion in 2007. A stack of one quadrillion pennies would reach Saturn.

Oh my god guys seriously what a rediculous thing to even think. I realizze like the article says later that its a ploy for attention and negotiating but wow thats a lot of law suits...

I personally think it's a great idea. They don't think they can win, obviously but the whole point is to raise attention to the huge amount of damage caused by the Hurricane and how many people's lives are still suffering because of it.
but sueing the people that came to help you is sorta dumb. They didn't have to go there, people choose to live there,, I live somewhere where a tornado can destroy my town in like 5 minutes I don't get to sue anyone when it does. at least not for a quadrillion dollar amount .wow.

The attempts to help after Katrina were insufficent and as a result a lot of people had to go through horrifying conditions so they have a right to feel wronged.
Yeah and a right to ask for just compentsation, but not compensation thats dwarfs the national debt. come one. its just dumb.

Insufficient help was given though, the of the U.S. army was over in Iraq, so not enough help was available, because we were in the middle east, waste of time.

The point isn't the amount, the point is that it's so ridiculously large that you could never think of paying it but it should still be recognized. It's like reparations for slavery.

I agree with you 100%. Charity organizations and private citizen's played more a part in the initial rescue efforts thatn did the US government. Truly shameful. Peole, 2 years later, are still homeless, jobless and at a total mental and physical loss.
In addition, the danger posed by such a massive hurricane to the levies was known for some 20 years. NOTHING was done to rectify this and when the unthinkable came to fuition, the people in these areas were left to be sitting ducks.
They may get some money, but the quadrillion suit (I believe) is more meant to be a statement and HOPEFULLY, a wake up call to avoid this tradgedy from happening to others on such a grand scale.
Katrina victims have absolutely, ABSOLUTELY, NO right to complain. A warning was issued months in advance and told EVERY resident to evacuate, that this hurricane was going to be huge and powerful. but those ingorant idiots chose to stay, KNOWING the danger, and dying for their stupidity. I am VERY happy that so many people died. The world is better off without them. FEMA came late to punish the retards that chose to stay. It is their own stupid faults that they died and were made homeless. Anyone who feigns innocence in this issue is stupid and I would like to slap them.

I get tired of this. Everybody goes on about New Orleans all the time. And no one even thinks to ask how bad it was for us Floridians. We didn't get anything but plastic on the roof and that was it. Many people do not know that Florida is the one helping them recover. We have a Katrina fund that is automatically taken out on our phone bill, light bill, and credit cards without our approval. I have seen many people here lose their homes, pack up and leave, or have water coming through the roof. And my family is one of those people, we have a bucket in the attic because we can't fix the roof until we get our credit card paid off just to spend it again for that.

I agree with all except its not the goverments fault the city and state did nothing to make better levies in that 20 years. But yes this needs to be reconized and I think they are being taken seriously, except the quad guy/

The warning was shortly before hand not months, the white house knew only 48 hours before what could happen. Lots of people never heard them, even then it wasn't certain how much would happen. Lots of people did try and evacuate but didn't have a car and most forms of public transport leaving the area were packed. So I'm curious how you think all these people could have evacuated? And even if everyone had left they're homes and livelihoods still would have been destroyed.
Don't be such a ****ing idiot.
