Re: get this another lawsuit
^^Thank you! Finally someone else looks at this intelligently.
Yeah, it sucks that so many people died and were made homeless, blah, blah, blah. But when you look at it, it is their own faults. They knew it was comin, whether or not they knew it would royally **** them. And yes, they do have it the best, as far as seeing the natural disaster coming ahead of time. they are the ones at fault, not FEMA, not the president, no one.

Well actually they'd known for years and years before that. Everyone knows half of California is built on a fault line. So if we expand on what Alexb is saying that if there's another earthquake which kills hundreds of thousands of people in California because it was stronger than even the toughest earthquake proof buildings were made with stand then we should not try and help them because it's all their fault for living their anyway. If the government bungles the ability to save many more homes and rescue people from the wreckage caused by the earthquake, it doesn't matter because it was their fault for living there.

Re: get this another lawsuit
It indeed was their fault for living their Tim, but the population of California is around 36 million. If people were to move from that area because of its unstableness and its ability to erupt and breakoff, where would they go?
They know of the dangers, but that's what insurance and paying taxes is for.
They should recieve help.
A natural disaster can occur at any moment, knowingly, or unknowingly, doesn't mean they should be ignored if they knew it was coming, and knew of the consequences. For most people don't have the money or ability to just get up and move like that.

Exactly my point and the people of New Orleans were far poorer than the majority of the US population.

Re: get this another lawsuit
Here is the thing...
The US government has taken more than it's share of the heat over their reponse to the Hurricane Katrina disaster. The response time of my government was inexcusable and many died and suffered needlessly due to this.... the Feds know this..(but we will return to this point later..)
I can not argue with those that have pointed out that that the resident's of this area knew of the hurriane threats, as the residents of the San Francisco area are well aware of the earthquake threat and the citizens (moreso the mobile home dwellers) of "tornado alley" know of the peril in the event of the reoccurring natural disasters. This is a given.
What is not being taken into account is that New Orleans in partiucular is an area of immense poverty. Many residents had no place to go and more to the point, thousands upon thousands had no WAY OF GETTING OUT! No cars, an inability to afford mass transit as a means of departure, etc.
School buses could have been used, the state and federal government could also have used Yankee Trails , Amtrak..etc..to help evacuate the area. There was too little done. Escape from the area became an economic issue.
So....what many of you may not know is that in order to sue the Federal Government of the USA, one was to petition for and get granted PERMISSION to due so. Yes, you read that right. YOU HAVE TO GET PERMISSION TO SUE THE US GOVERNMENT.
In this case, permission was granted. The US government knew it ****ed up and wants to be done with the PR fall out. They are letting these people sue to put this to bed. They will admit to "some wrong doing" and make a good case (through tip toeing around) for contributory factors on the part of the residents/victims. There will be an initial settlement in a class action suit that will give a substantial amount to the masses that will have to be divied up and spread out to ALL of the victims, not just those bringing the suit. Anyone in the area must be put on notice. This will take FOREVER....But what the public will remember is that the US government made good to the victims by compensating them with huge amounts of money. This will be the INITIAL ruling and the only one that will make big headlines.
The legal system of appeals moves at a glacial pace....and given the obsscene amount the intial settlement will be, the US goverment will be sure to appeal.
The farther away from the incident, the less remembered it will be and less emotion will be attached to the outcome. With appeals, issues of law, constitutionality, etc, the case will be finally settled long after Katrina has been placed in the hisotory books and each person might get a token $ figure.
It is a way of placating the victims by allowing this suit. The courtroom drama will be grand and the joyous verdict will bring tears of both sadness and joy. End US government nightmare!!!!
Again, the appeals will not be noted but on page 21 of the local newspaper, buried next to the dog catcher digest. The will ultimately pay out next to nothing and will have washed their hands of the Hurrucan Katrina mess in Round 1 in the Public's eye.
Trust me, this was a calculated and brilliant move by the US government. They are using our ridiculous and overly litigious system of law to their utmost advantage.

Re: get this another lawsuit
My point was not to say that they didn't deserve to be helped, hell, everyone in dire need deserves help. What I was sayign was that it was rightful for FEMA to come late, to show the people tat chose to stay there that they are the ones at fault for them not leaving.
The people that stayed were not being brave, they weren't staying because they couldn't leave, they were staying because they were stupid and thought that the hurricane wasn't going to be a danger to them. I know for a fact that they got warning far ahead of time. If I knew a week before it happened, then they had to have known much longer than that. I was making bets with my older brother about whether it would kill a bunch of people or just blow over. I lost fifteen bucks.
People have feet for a reason, which is to be used for moving. Just because you are poor doesn't mean you can't walk right? I can walk perfectly fine, it doesnt cost me a ****ing penny. So stop making excuses for the retards that felt they were in no danger, they had warnings, they had feet, and the knowledge that this hurricane could be very bad.
Were you in the hurricane zones? Did your familt die because they were retarded? A good freind of mine died in that hurricne for the same reason everyone else did. He didn't think it would be a bad hurricane knowing full well that it was a bad one.
So you can't possibly go around pardoning everyone's stupidity just because they are poor and can't afford cars or public transportation. Before all of that, human;s had their feet for moving. Peopel are meant to use them. Yeah it sucks that so many people died. Sure it sucks that so many people are still homeless to this day. There would be many more alive than dead, if only they had listened to the governemtn when they were telling them that the hurricane was likely to kill them all. A lot of people had left the hurricane zones before hand, because they took the advice the government gave them and fled, Rich and poor alike. I congratulate the people wise enough to flee when gianing knowledge of the danger, and I scold the fools who felt they would be safe in their homes.
My living in an earthquake-able city, I know the danger. I ALSO know that the earthquakes here in San Diego are very minor and insignificant.

^The San Andreas fault line runs right underneath a nuclear power plant in Southern California....truly brilliant that one was.
My point f/k/a Alexb, was to explain the government's logic for ALLOWING this suit. Did you get that at least?

Re: get this another lawsuit
its dangerous to live in Cali period. But that danger can't stop you from doing something or people will just stack up in New York oh wait they are lol. No seriously I only wanted to point out how much said people were asking for. Its clear they will get little if anything actually and they should be happy they have their lives and use what ever money they get to move to Texas, oh wait there are tornados there ....
