You could also check out Anarchy Online, you can play for free.
While the free accounts don't have access to all the expansions, you can cap your character, easily leveling up to level 220....

AO is a science-fiction based MMORPG..this game is massive
(It says on the site that the free account offer will end in January, but they have been saying that for awhile, every year they extend it...)
Graphics-wise, it's a bit cartoonish/dated, I'll admit...content-wise, this game is deep, complicated, and complex
The free accounts (fr00b, as in free noob, so the in-game slang goes) are a lot of fun, great for learning and exploring a game of this depth..
While you don't have access to some of the areas and items offered in the expansions, you can build perfectly respectable characters, just forget about PvP against anybody who has the expansions.. My level 75 Nano-Technician (aggressive spell caster, basically) got owned by a level 40 character with the expansions...
All in all, very much worth the download and time required to sign up. As far as upgrading to a full account, it's really not expensive, about 8$ a month or so, around 100$ for a year. (the free accounts can be upgraded, there's no need to start your character over).....
