Sony (Finally) Ends PSOne Production
I'm sure some of you have heard the Playstation's history already, but here it is straight from the mouths of game developers in the industry. Sony has been stealing from Nintendo from day one. ;) (and just for the sake of icemagic, I'm not being serious about that statement, you nitpicker)
source
Sony officials have confirmed that the company has stopped production of the PSone console, in light of the existing PS2 backwards compatibility, the upcoming release of the PlayStation 3, and proposed PSone emulation for the PSP.
As Sony’s first entry in the video games market, the original PlayStation was first conceived as far back as 1988, as a CD-ROM peripheral for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. A CES debut in 1991 was nixed by then Nintendo president Hiroshi Yamauchi, following a dispute over profit sharing, and Sony began promoting the project as a stand alone console later in the year.
The PlayStation launched in Japan on December 3rd, 1994 and in North America and Europe in September 1995. as of June 2005, the original PlayStation had shipped a global total of 103 million units, behind only the PlayStation 2 and the original Game Boy.
The PSone – the smaller, redesigned version of the original console – was introduced in September 2000 and according to Sony, continues to sell around the world, with consumer website GameSpot quoting a Sony representative as claiming that the closing of production does not necessarily mean the end of availability for the landmark console.

Re: Sony (Finally) Ends PSOne Production
This was inevitable what with the PS2 being backwards compatable. It only makes sense.

Re: Sony (Finally) Ends PSOne Production
Dunno, isn't there also a mini version of PS2? I remember seeing it once at Best Buy.

Re: Sony (Finally) Ends PSOne Production
You mean the slim version that has become the standard? And caused people to have to buy different controllers and stuff to fit in the slimmer ports? And also caused people to be delivered the wrong version of a product, (say you order a multitap for the original PS2, and get one for the slim version)?

Re: Sony (Finally) Ends PSOne Production
The land where you order something from Sony and they send you a product that works on the slim PS2 but not the original.

Re: Sony (Finally) Ends PSOne Production
OHHHH right, the stand, i gocha, you need a different shaped stand for the small ps2. Right, I forgot about the stand, but other than that and the network adapter, every thing else works in both.

Re: Sony (Finally) Ends PSOne Production
I thought they stopped production months ago once they hit 100 million units. Guess they wanted those extra 3 million to ship though.

Re: Sony (Finally) Ends PSOne Production
Ahh that explains it.. I had read ages ago in I think Time where they were interviewing the head of Sony and he said that they and Nintendo were planning to pair up to make a console, but it didn't work out. That explains a lot, thank you Drake.
Although, I was quite shocked by the title of this thread -- I would've thought the PSOne production was ended years ago. With the price of even PS2s now, it would have seemed quite impractical for Sony to have kept them in production.
